Tuesday of the Twenty-ninth Week in Ordinary Time

Lectionary 474

First Reading — Ephesians 2:12–22

Ephesians 2:12 — Paul reminds the Gentile believers that they were once separated from Christ, strangers to Israel’s covenants, and without the hope of God’s promises.

Ephesians 2:13 — Through the blood of Jesus Christ, those who were once far away have now been brought near to God.

Ephesians 2:14–16 — Christ is our peace. He broke down the dividing wall between Jews and Gentiles, removing the hostility created by the Law and bringing both together as one new people through His cross.

Ephesians 2:17–18 — Jesus proclaimed peace to those who were far away and those who were near. Through Him, both have access to the Father by one Spirit.

Ephesians 2:19 — Gentile believers are no longer strangers or outsiders. They are fellow citizens with God’s holy people and members of His household.

Ephesians 2:20–22 — God’s people are built upon the foundation of the apostles and prophets, with Jesus Christ as the cornerstone. Together, they become a holy temple where God dwells through His Spirit.

Paul reveals that through the New Covenant, Jews and Gentiles are united in Christ, becoming one spiritual household and dwelling place of God.

Responsorial Psalm — Psalm 85:9ab–10, 11–12, 13–14

Response: The Lord speaks of peace to his people.

Psalm 85:9–10 — God promises peace to His people. Salvation is near to those who honor Him, and His glory dwells among them.

Psalm 85:11–12 — Mercy and truth come together. Righteousness and peace are joined, and faithfulness springs forth from the earth.

Psalm 85:13–14 — The Lord provides His blessings. Righteousness goes before Him and prepares the way for His salvation.

Alleluia — Luke 21:36

Jesus instructs His followers to remain watchful and prayerful so they may have the strength to stand before the Son of Man.

Gospel — Luke 12:35–38

Luke 12:35 — Jesus tells His disciples to be dressed and ready for service, keeping their lamps burning.

Luke 12:36 — They should be like servants waiting for their master to return from a wedding celebration, prepared to open the door immediately.

Luke 12:37 — Blessed are the servants whom the master finds watching when he arrives. Remarkably, the master will serve those faithful servants.

Luke 12:38 — Even if the master arrives late at night, those who remain prepared will be blessed.

Jesus teaches His disciples the importance of remaining faithful, watchful, and prepared for His coming.

Kingdom Connection

Today’s readings reveal a beautiful truth about the establishment of God’s New Covenant Kingdom.

Paul tells first-century believers that Jews and Gentiles had already been brought together as one people through Jesus Christ.

They were no longer strangers but fellow citizens in God’s household.

Rather than emphasizing a physical temple, Paul describes believers themselves as God’s spiritual temple, with Christ as the cornerstone.

Jesus reminds His disciples to remain watchful and faithful as they await their Master’s coming.

Through Christ, God’s people are united in one spiritual Kingdom, where His presence dwells among them through the Holy Spirit.
