Memorial of Saints John de Brébeuf and Isaac Jogues, Priests, and Companions, Martyrs

Lectionary 473

First Reading — Ephesians 2:1–10

Ephesians 2:1–2 — Paul reminds believers that they were once spiritually dead because of their sins, following the ways of the world rather than God’s ways.

Ephesians 2:3 — All had once lived according to sinful desires and were deserving of God’s judgment.

Ephesians 2:4–5 — But God, rich in mercy and great in love, made believers alive together with Christ, even when they were spiritually dead in sin.

Ephesians 2:6 — God raised believers with Christ and seated them with Him in the heavenly places.

Ephesians 2:7 — Through Jesus Christ, God reveals the extraordinary riches of His grace and kindness.

Ephesians 2:8–9 — Salvation comes through God’s grace and is received through faith. It is His gift, not something earned through human works.

Ephesians 2:10 — Believers are God’s workmanship, created anew in Jesus Christ to perform the good works He prepared for them.

Paul teaches that salvation is God’s gift through Jesus Christ. Those who were spiritually dead have been made alive and raised with Christ.

Responsorial Psalm — Psalm 100:1b–2, 3, 4ab, 4c–5

Response: The Lord made us, we belong to him.

Psalm 100:1–2 — All the earth is invited to rejoice in the Lord, serve Him gladly, and come before Him with joyful praise.

Psalm 100:3 — Recognize that the Lord alone is God. He created us, and we belong to Him as the sheep of His flock.

Psalm 100:4 — Enter His gates with thanksgiving and His courts with praise.

Psalm 100:5 — The Lord is good. His mercy endures forever, and His faithfulness continues through every generation.

Alleluia — Matthew 5:3

Jesus declares that those who are poor in spirit are blessed, for the Kingdom of Heaven belongs to them.

Gospel — Luke 12:13–21

Luke 12:13 — A man in the crowd asks Jesus to tell his brother to divide their family inheritance.

Luke 12:14 — Jesus responds by questioning why He should act as the judge of their inheritance dispute.

Luke 12:15 — Jesus warns everyone to guard against greed because the value of a person’s life is not measured by possessions.

Luke 12:16–17 — Jesus tells a parable about a wealthy farmer whose land produces such an abundant harvest that he has nowhere to store it.

Luke 12:18 — The farmer decides to tear down his barns and build larger ones to store his wealth.

Luke 12:19 — Believing he has secured many comfortable years, the farmer plans to relax, eat, drink, and enjoy his possessions.

Luke 12:20 — But God tells him that his life will end that very night. All the wealth he accumulated will be left behind.

Luke 12:21 — Jesus explains that this is what happens to those who store up earthly treasures but neglect what truly matters to God.

Jesus teaches that earthly possessions cannot provide lasting security. True riches come from living in a right relationship with God.

Kingdom Connection

Today’s readings reveal the difference between earthly riches and the spiritual inheritance believers receive through Jesus Christ.

Paul tells first-century Christians that God had already made them spiritually alive, raised them with Christ, and seated them with Him in heavenly places.

This demonstrates the spiritual reality of God’s Kingdom through the New Covenant. Believers were already experiencing new life in Christ.

Jesus reminds His audience that earthly possessions are temporary, while the riches of God’s grace have lasting value.

Our greatest treasure is not what we accumulate on earth, but the new life and inheritance we have in God’s everlasting Kingdom.
