Friday of the Twenty-seventh Week in Ordinary Time
Lectionary: 465
First Reading — Galatians 3:7-14
Paul reminds the Galatians that God’s promises to Abraham are fulfilled through faith in Jesus Christ.
Those who have faith are the true children of Abraham.
Through Abraham, all nations would receive God’s blessing.
The righteous shall live by faith.
Christ redeemed us from the curse of the Law.
Through Jesus Christ, the blessing promised to Abraham reaches the Gentiles, so that all who believe may receive the promised Holy Spirit.
Paul explains that righteousness before God does not come through keeping the Law of Moses. It comes through faith in Jesus Christ.
The promise given to Abraham was always intended to bring God’s blessings to all nations.
Responsorial Psalm — Psalm 111:1b-2, 3-4, 5-6
The Lord will remember His covenant forever.
I will praise the Lord with all my heart.
Great are the works of the Lord, and His righteousness endures forever.
He is gracious and full of compassion.
He remembers His covenant and provides for those who honor Him.
God has revealed His mighty works and made known His promises concerning the nations.
His faithfulness never fails.
Alleluia — John 12:31b-32
The ruler of this world will be cast out.
When Jesus is lifted up from the earth, He will draw people to Himself.
Gospel — Luke 11:15-26
After Jesus casts out a demon, some accuse Him of using the power of Beelzebul, the ruler of demons.
Others demand a sign from heaven.
Jesus knows their thoughts and answers:
A kingdom divided against itself cannot stand.
If Satan fights against himself, how can his kingdom survive?
“The kingdom of God is come upon you.”
Jesus explains that when a stronger man overcomes an armed strong man, he takes away the weapons in which the strong man trusted.
Jesus then declares:
Whoever is not with Me is against Me.
Whoever does not gather with Me scatters.
He continues with a warning about an unclean spirit leaving a person.
The spirit wanders, seeking rest. When it returns and finds its former dwelling empty and orderly, it brings seven other spirits more wicked than itself.
The person’s final condition becomes worse than before.
Jesus teaches that removing evil is not enough. A life must also be filled with God’s presence and remain faithful to Him.

Paul confirms that the promises made to Abraham were being fulfilled through Christ, bringing Jews and Gentiles together through faith.
The Old Covenant was giving way to the New Covenant, and the Kingdom promised by the prophets was being revealed through Jesus Christ.
