Memorial of the Holy Guardian Angels
Reading 1 — Job 38:1, 12-21; 40:3-5
• God asks Job whether he has ever commanded the morning or shown the dawn its place.
• He asks whether Job has entered the depths of the sea or seen the gates of death.
• God asks if Job understands the vastness of the earth or the paths of light and darkness.
• Job finally recognizes how small his understanding is before God.
“I am of little account.”
Job learns that God’s wisdom reaches far beyond what human beings can see or understand.
Responsorial Psalm — Psalm 139:1-3, 7-8, 9-10, 13-14ab
Response: Guide me, Lord, along the everlasting way.
• “O LORD, you have probed me and you know me.”
• God knows when we sit and when we stand.
• He understands our thoughts and knows our paths.
• “Where can I go from your spirit?”
• Even if we rise to the heavens or descend to the depths, God is there.
• “Your right hand would hold me fast.”
• God formed us in the womb.
• “Wonderful are your works.”
The Psalm reminds us that God knows us completely and remains with us wherever we go.
Alleluia — Psalm 103:21
“Bless the LORD, all you his angels, you mighty in strength, who do his bidding.”
The angels serve God and carry out His will.
Gospel — Matthew 18:1-5, 10
• The disciples ask Jesus, “Who is the greatest in the Kingdom of heaven?”
• Jesus calls a child over and places the child among them.
• “Unless you turn and become like children, you will not enter the Kingdom of heaven.”
• “Whoever humbles himself like this child is the greatest in the Kingdom of heaven.”
• “Whoever receives one child such as this in my name receives me.”
• Jesus warns them not to despise the little ones.
• He says their angels in heaven continually behold the face of the Father.
Jesus teaches that greatness in His Kingdom is not measured by status, power, or recognition, but by humility, trust, and receiving others in His name.
Kingdom Connection
Jesus was speaking directly to His first-century disciples about life in the Kingdom of heaven. They were still tempted to think in terms of rank and importance, but Jesus pointed them toward humility. His Kingdom would not operate like earthly kingdoms. Those who belong to Christ are called to become humble, dependent upon God, and willing to receive even the least in His name.
