Memorial of Saint Thérèse of the Child Jesus, Virgin and Doctor of the Church

Lectionary 458

Reading 1 — Job 19:21-27

• Job cries out in the middle of deep suffering and asks his friends for compassion.
• He longs for his words to be preserved permanently.
• Yet his faith breaks through his pain: “I know that my Vindicator lives.”
• He trusts that he will ultimately behold God.

Job cannot explain his suffering, but he refuses to give up his hope in God.

Responsorial Psalm — Psalm 27:7-8a, 8b-9abc, 13-14

Response: I believe that I shall see the good things of the Lord in the land of the living.

• The Psalmist calls on the Lord to hear and answer.
• His heart continues to seek God’s presence.
• He refuses to lose hope.
• He waits courageously for the Lord.

Faith keeps seeking God even when the answer has not yet appeared.

Alleluia — Mark 1:15

“The Kingdom of God is at hand.”

The call is to repent and believe the Gospel.

Gospel — Luke 10:1-12

• Jesus appoints seventy-two disciples and sends them ahead of Him in pairs.
• He tells them the harvest is abundant but the laborers are few.
• They are sent with urgency and dependence upon God.
• They are to bring peace, heal the sick, and announce that the Kingdom of God has drawn near.
• Towns that reject the message are warned of coming judgment.

Jesus sends His own first-century disciples directly into the towns before Him, carrying the announcement that God’s Kingdom was arriving.

Kingdom Connection

This Gospel is especially important because Jesus was not describing a distant mission thousands of years later. He sent those seventy-two disciples into the towns of their own generation proclaiming that the Kingdom was already near. Acceptance brought peace; rejection brought a warning of judgment. That urgency fits the first-century transition from the Old Covenant order into Christ’s New Covenant Kingdom, a transition that reached its decisive historical climax in AD 70.
