Memorial of Saint Jerome, Priest and Doctor of the Church
Reading 1 — Job 9:1-12, 14-16
• Job asks how anyone can truly contend with God.
• God is wise in heart and mighty in strength.
• He made the stars and stretches out the heavens.
• He does great things beyond human understanding.
• Job recognizes that even if he believed himself right, he would still need to appeal to God for mercy.
Job is humbled by the greatness of God. He cannot explain everything that is happening, but he knows God’s wisdom and power are far beyond his own.
Responsorial Psalm — Psalm 88:10bc-11, 12-13, 14-15
Response: Let my prayer come before you, Lord.
• I call to You daily, Lord.
• I stretch out my hands toward You.
• I cry out to You in the morning.
• Even when I do not understand Your ways, I continue to pray.
The Psalm gives voice to someone suffering deeply but still turning toward God.
Alleluia — Philippians 3:8-9
“I consider all things so much rubbish that I may gain Christ and be found in him.”
Paul places knowing Christ above everything else.
Gospel — Luke 9:57-62
• One man tells Jesus, “I will follow you wherever you go.”
• Jesus warns him that the Son of Man has nowhere to rest His head.
• Jesus tells another man, “Follow me.”
• Jesus then says, “Go and proclaim the Kingdom of God.”
• Another wants to follow Jesus but first return home.
• Jesus answers, “No one who sets a hand to the plow and looks to what was left behind is fit for the Kingdom of God.”
Jesus makes it clear that following Him and proclaiming God’s Kingdom must take priority over everything else.
Kingdom Connection
Jesus was calling first-century disciples into a Kingdom mission that required urgency and commitment. They were being sent to proclaim that God’s promised Kingdom was arriving through Christ. The old covenant age was passing away, and Jesus was gathering a people who would carry the Gospel forward into the New Covenant world.
