Saturday of the Twenty-sixth Week in Ordinary Time
Reading 1 — Job 42:1-3, 5-6, 12-17
• Job acknowledges that God can do all things and that His purposes cannot be stopped.
• “I know that you can do all things.”
• Job admits that he had spoken about things too wonderful for him to fully understand.
• He moves from merely hearing about God to a much deeper personal understanding of Him.
• Job humbles himself before the Lord.
• God then blesses the latter part of Job’s life more abundantly than the beginning.
Job’s suffering did not have the final word. He came through it with deeper faith, greater humility, and renewed blessing.
Responsorial Psalm — Psalm 119:66, 71, 75, 91, 125, 130
Response: “Lord, let your face shine on me.”
• Teach me wisdom and knowledge, for I trust in Your commands.
• Even affliction became an opportunity to learn God’s ways.
• God’s judgments are just and faithful.
• Everything continues according to His command.
• Give Your servant understanding.
• God’s Word brings light and gives understanding to the simple.
God’s Word gives wisdom, light, and direction even during difficult seasons.
Alleluia — Matthew 11:25
Blessed are You, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, for revealing the mysteries of the Kingdom to the childlike.
Gospel — Luke 10:17-24
• The seventy-two disciples return rejoicing because even demons submit to them through Jesus’ name.
• Jesus tells them He saw Satan fall like lightning from heaven.
• He reminds them that spiritual power is not their greatest reason for rejoicing.
• “Your names are written in heaven.”
• Jesus praises the Father for revealing Kingdom truths to the humble rather than the proud.
• He then turns directly to His disciples and tells them how blessed they are to see what they are seeing.
• Prophets and kings had longed to see and hear the things now being revealed through Christ.
Jesus directs their attention away from power and toward the greater gift: belonging to God and seeing the fulfillment of what earlier generations had hoped for.
Kingdom Connection
Jesus told those first-century disciples that they were blessed because they were seeing what prophets and kings had longed to see. The Kingdom was not merely a distant future hope to them. They were watching God’s promises unfold through Christ as the old age was giving way to the New Covenant reality He was establishing.
