Feast of Saints Michael, Gabriel, and Raphael, Archangels
Reading 1 — Daniel 7:9-10, 13-14
or Revelation 12:7-12ab
Daniel option — key Scripture lines:
• Daniel sees the Ancient One seated in judgment.
• “One like a son of man” comes with the clouds of heaven.
• He receives dominion, glory, and kingship.
• His dominion is everlasting and His Kingdom will not be destroyed.
Revelation option — key Scripture lines:
• Michael and his angels battle the dragon.
• The dragon is cast down.
• A loud voice declares that salvation, power, the Kingdom of God, and the authority of His Christ have come.
• God’s people conquer by the Blood of the Lamb and by the word of their testimony.
Both readings focus on God’s victory, heavenly judgment, and the authority of His Kingdom.
Responsorial Psalm — Psalm 138:1-2ab, 2cde-3, 4-5
Response: In the sight of the angels I will sing your praises, Lord.
• Lord, I give You thanks with all my heart.
• You answered when I called.
• You strengthened me.
• The kings of the earth will hear Your words and praise Your glory.
Alleluia — Psalm 103:21
“Bless the LORD, all you angels, you ministers, who do his will.”
Gospel — John 1:47-51
• Jesus calls Nathanael “a true child of Israel.”
• Nathanael declares, “Rabbi, you are the Son of God; you are the King of Israel.”
• Jesus tells him he will see greater things.
• Jesus says, “You will see heaven opened and the angels of God ascending and descending on the Son of Man.”
Jesus identifies Himself as the meeting place between heaven and earth and the true King of Israel.
Kingdom Connection
Daniel’s vision and Jesus’ words to Nathanael come together around the Son of Man receiving an everlasting Kingdom. Jesus was speaking to a first-century Israelite who confessed Him as King, and He pointed to heaven being opened through Himself. Revelation likewise announces the victory of God’s Kingdom and the authority of His Christ. These passages naturally point toward Christ’s reign, the defeat of the accuser, and the establishment of the New Covenant Kingdom.
