Monday of the Twenty-sixth Week in Ordinary Time
Reading 1 — Job 1:6-22
• Job was faithful to God and lived uprightly.
• In one terrible day, he lost his livestock, servants, and children.
• Even in grief, Job fell down and worshiped God.
• He said, “The LORD gave and the LORD has taken away; blessed be the name of the LORD!”
Job did not understand why suffering had come, but he refused to turn against God.
Responsorial Psalm — Psalm 17:1bcd, 2-3, 6-7
Response: Incline your ear to me and hear my word.
• Lord, hear my prayer.
• Examine my heart and judge what is right.
• I call upon You because You hear me.
• Show Your mercy to those who take refuge in You.
The Psalm reminds us that we can bring our trouble directly to God and trust Him to hear us.
Alleluia — Mark 10:45
“The Son of Man came to serve and to give his life as a ransom for many.”
Gospel — Luke 9:46-50
• The disciples argued about which of them was the greatest.
• Jesus placed a child beside Him and taught them to receive the humble and overlooked.
• He said, “The one who is least among all of you is the one who is the greatest.”
• John told Jesus they had tried to stop someone casting out demons in His name because he was not part of their group.
• Jesus answered, “Do not prevent him, for whoever is not against you is for you.”
Jesus showed that greatness in His Kingdom is not about position or status. It is about humility, service, and belonging to Him.
Kingdom Connection
Jesus was preparing His first-century disciples for a Kingdom very different from earthly kingdoms. They were still thinking in terms of position and importance, but Jesus taught humility and service. Soon, after His resurrection, the Gospel would move beyond their immediate circle and gather both Israel and the Gentiles into one people in Christ.
