Feast of Saints Simon and Jude, Apostles
Lectionary 666
First Reading — Ephesians 2:19–22
Ephesians 2:19 — Through Jesus Christ, believers are no longer strangers or outsiders. They are fellow citizens with God's holy people and members of His household.
Ephesians 2:20 — God's household is built upon the foundation of the apostles and prophets, with Jesus Christ Himself as the cornerstone.
Ephesians 2:21 — Through Christ, the entire spiritual building is joined together and grows into a holy temple dedicated to the Lord.
Ephesians 2:22 — Believers are being built together into a dwelling place where God lives through His Spirit.
Through the New Covenant, God's people become one spiritual household, united in Christ rather than separated by their former covenantal boundaries.
Responsorial Psalm — Psalm 19:2–3, 4–5
Response: Their message goes out through all the earth.
Psalm 19:2–3 — The heavens declare God's glory, and the skies proclaim His magnificent works. Day after day and night after night, creation bears witness to Him.
Psalm 19:4–5 — This testimony reaches throughout the earth, carrying its message to the ends of the world.
All creation reveals God's glory, while the apostolic proclamation carries the good news of Christ throughout the nations.
Alleluia — Te Deum
Praise to God, our Lord! The glorious company of apostles joins in worship and thanksgiving to Him.
Gospel — Luke 6:12–16
Luke 6:12 — Jesus goes up a mountain and spends the entire night praying to God.
Luke 6:13 — When morning comes, He calls His disciples together and chooses twelve of them, giving them the title of apostles.
Luke 6:14 — Jesus chooses Simon, whom He names Peter, along with Andrew, James, John, Philip, and Bartholomew.
Luke 6:15 — He also chooses Matthew, Thomas, James the son of Alphaeus, and Simon called the Zealot.
Luke 6:16 — The remaining two are Judas the son of James, also known as Jude, and Judas Iscariot, who would later betray Jesus.
Jesus personally chooses twelve apostles, establishing the group that would become foundational witnesses to His resurrection and messengers of His Kingdom.
Kingdom Connection
Today's readings reveal the establishment of God's New Covenant household through Jesus Christ and His apostles.
Paul tells first-century believers that they were already fellow citizens with God's holy people, built upon the foundation of the apostles and prophets, with Jesus Christ as the cornerstone.
This spiritual household connects beautifully with the New Jerusalem described in Revelation 21:14, where the twelve apostles' names appear on the city's foundations.
Jesus chose the twelve from among His disciples, and following His resurrection, the apostolic message spread throughout Israel and to the Gentiles.
Through Christ, God's people are no longer strangers but citizens of His everlasting Kingdom, joined together as His spiritual temple where God dwells through His Spirit.
