Tuesday of the Thirtieth Week in Ordinary Time

Lectionary 480

First Reading — Ephesians 5:21–33

Ephesians 5:21 — Paul instructs believers to submit to one another out of reverence for Jesus Christ.

Ephesians 5:22–24 — Wives are called to honor their husbands, just as the Church recognizes Christ as its head and Savior.

Ephesians 5:25–27 — Husbands must love their wives as Christ loved the Church, giving Himself for her so that she might become holy and blameless.

Ephesians 5:28–30 — Husbands should love and care for their wives as their own bodies. Likewise, Christ nourishes and cares for His Church because believers are members of His body.

Ephesians 5:31 — A man leaves his father and mother and is joined to his wife, and the two become one flesh.

Ephesians 5:32–33 — Paul reveals that this union illustrates a great mystery concerning Christ and His Church. Husbands are called to love their wives, and wives to respect their husbands.

Paul teaches that marriage reflects the spiritual relationship between Jesus Christ and His Church, united through sacrificial love and faithfulness.

Responsorial Psalm — Psalm 128:1–2, 3, 4–5

Response: Blessed are those who fear the Lord.

Psalm 128:1–2 — Blessed are those who honor the Lord and walk in His ways. They will enjoy the fruit of their labor and receive His blessings.

Psalm 128:3 — A faithful household is pictured as a fruitful vine, with children flourishing like young olive trees.

Psalm 128:4–5 — Those who reverence God are blessed. May the Lord bless them from Zion and grant them the joy of seeing Jerusalem prosper.

Alleluia — See Matthew 11:25

Matthew 11:25 — Jesus praises the Father, Lord of heaven and earth, because He reveals the mysteries of His Kingdom to the humble and childlike.

Gospel — Luke 13:18–21

Luke 13:18 — Jesus asks what the Kingdom of God is like and what comparison will help people understand it.

Luke 13:19 — He compares the Kingdom to a tiny mustard seed planted in a garden. It grows into a large plant where birds can find shelter among its branches.

Luke 13:20 — Jesus again asks what He can compare God's Kingdom to.

Luke 13:21 — He compares it to yeast that a woman mixes into a large amount of flour until the yeast spreads throughout the entire batch.

Jesus teaches that God's Kingdom may begin in a small, seemingly insignificant way, yet it grows and transforms everything it reaches.

Kingdom Connection

Today's readings reveal the spiritual nature and growth of God's Kingdom through Jesus Christ.

Paul tells first-century believers that the relationship between Christ and His Church is like a marriage, united through love and faithfulness. This reflects the New Covenant relationship established through Jesus.

Jesus explains that God's Kingdom would grow like a mustard seed and spread like yeast, beginning with a small group of believers and reaching far beyond Israel.

The Gospel was already spreading among Jews and Gentiles during the apostolic generation, demonstrating the Kingdom's transforming power.

God's Kingdom was not waiting to begin in some distant age. Through Jesus Christ, it was already growing, bringing people into His everlasting spiritual household.
