Monday of the Thirtieth Week in Ordinary Time

Lectionary 479

First Reading — Ephesians 4:32–5:8

Ephesians 4:32 — Be kind and compassionate toward one another, forgiving others just as God has forgiven you through Christ.

Ephesians 5:1–2 — Imitate God as His beloved children. Walk in love, following the example of Jesus Christ, who offered Himself as a sacrifice for us.

Ephesians 5:3–4 — Avoid sexual immorality, impurity, greed, and improper speech. Instead, let your words express thanksgiving to God.

Ephesians 5:5 — Those who persist in immoral, impure, or greedy lives have no inheritance in the Kingdom of Christ and God.

Ephesians 5:6–7 — Do not be deceived by empty arguments or join others in disobedience to God.

Ephesians 5:8 — You were once living in darkness, but now you are light in the Lord. Live as children of light.

Paul reminds first-century believers that their new life in Christ should be demonstrated through love, forgiveness, holiness, and obedience to God.

Responsorial Psalm — Psalm 1:1–2, 3, 4, 6

Response: Behave like God as his very dear children.

Psalm 1:1–2 — Blessed are those who reject wickedness and delight in God’s instruction, meditating upon His Word continually.

Psalm 1:3 — The righteous are like trees planted beside flowing water, producing fruit in season and remaining strong.

Psalm 1:4 — The wicked are like chaff scattered by the wind, having no lasting foundation.

Psalm 1:6 — The Lord watches over the path of the righteous, but the way of the wicked leads to destruction.

Alleluia — John 17:17b, 17a

John 17:17 — God’s Word is truth. Jesus asks the Father to make His followers holy through that truth.

Gospel — Luke 13:10–17

Luke 13:10–11 — Jesus is teaching in a synagogue on the Sabbath when He sees a woman who has been bent over and unable to stand upright for eighteen years.

Luke 13:12–13 — Jesus calls her forward, declares her free from her infirmity, and lays His hands upon her. Immediately, she stands upright and praises God.

Luke 13:14 — The synagogue leader becomes angry because Jesus healed on the Sabbath. He tells the people that healing should take place on the other six days.

Luke 13:15 — Jesus exposes their hypocrisy, reminding them that they untie their animals and lead them to water even on the Sabbath.

Luke 13:16 — Jesus explains that this woman, a daughter of Abraham whom Satan had bound for eighteen years, certainly deserved to be released from her bondage on the Sabbath.

Luke 13:17 — His opponents are put to shame, while the people rejoice over the wonderful things Jesus has accomplished.

Jesus demonstrates that God’s mercy and deliverance are greater than restrictive human interpretations of religious observances. The Sabbath was not intended to prevent God’s people from experiencing His goodness.

Kingdom Connection

Today’s readings reveal the freedom and new life that Jesus Christ brings through God’s Kingdom.

Paul tells first-century believers that they were once in darkness but had now become light in the Lord. Their lives were to reflect the spiritual transformation already taking place through Christ.

Jesus demonstrates His authority by releasing a daughter of Abraham from eighteen years of bondage. His actions challenge religious leaders who placed their interpretation of Sabbath observance above compassion and deliverance.

This healing also points toward the greater freedom Christ brings through the New Covenant, where God’s people are called to live in truth, love, and righteousness.

Through Jesus Christ, God’s people have been called out of darkness into the light and freedom of His everlasting Kingdom.
