Thursday, September 24, 2026 — Thursday of the Twenty-fifth Week in Ordinary Time

First Reading — Ecclesiastes 1:2–11

“Vanity of vanities! All things are vanity!”

One generation passes and another comes. The sun rises and sets, the wind circles, and the rivers continue toward the sea.

Earthly things never completely satisfy us. What seems new has often happened before, reminding us how temporary human accomplishments are compared with God.

Responsorial Psalm — Psalm 90:3–4, 5–6, 12–13, 14, 17bc

“In every age, O Lord, you have been our refuge.”

Human life passes quickly, like grass that grows in the morning and fades by evening.

We ask God to teach us to use our days wisely, fill us with His kindness, and bless the work of our hands.

Alleluia — John 14:6

“I am the way and the truth and the life.”

Jesus directs us to the Father through Himself.

Gospel — Luke 9:7–9

Herod hears about everything Jesus is doing and becomes confused.

Some believe John the Baptist has been raised. Others say Elijah or another ancient prophet has appeared.

Herod asks:

“Who then is this about whom I hear such things?”

He continues seeking an opportunity to see Jesus.

Kingdom Connection

The Gospel places us directly within the expectations of first-century Israel, where questions about the prophets, resurrection, and the identity of Jesus were already being raised. Earthly rulers such as Herod came and went, while Christ was revealing the lasting Kingdom and life found in Him.
