Friday of the Twenty-ninth Week in Ordinary Time

Lectionary 477

Optional Memorial of Saint John of Capistrano, Priest

First Reading — Ephesians 4:1–6

Ephesians 4:1 — Paul, writing as a prisoner for the Lord, urges believers to live in a manner worthy of their calling.

Ephesians 4:2 — Be humble, gentle, and patient, showing love and understanding toward one another.

Ephesians 4:3 — Make every effort to preserve the unity given by the Holy Spirit through the bond of peace.

Ephesians 4:4 — There is one body and one Spirit, just as believers share one hope in God’s calling.

Ephesians 4:5 — There is one Lord, one faith, and one baptism.

Ephesians 4:6 — There is one God and Father of all, who reigns over all, works through all, and is present in all.

Paul reminds first-century Christians that their calling in Christ requires humility, love, peace, and unity. God’s people are joined together through one Lord and one Spirit.

Responsorial Psalm — Psalm 24:1–2, 3–4ab, 5–6

Response: Lord, this is the people that longs to see your face.

Psalm 24:1–2 — The entire earth and everyone living in it belong to the Lord. He established the world upon its foundations.

Psalm 24:3–4 — Who may ascend God’s holy mountain and stand in His presence? Those whose hands are innocent and whose hearts are pure.

Psalm 24:5–6 — God blesses those who seek Him sincerely. They receive righteousness and salvation from the Lord.

God’s people are called to seek His presence with clean hearts and faithful lives.

Alleluia — Matthew 11:25

Praise to the Father, Lord of heaven and earth, who reveals the mysteries of His Kingdom to those who approach Him with humility.

Gospel — Luke 12:54–59

Luke 12:54 — Jesus tells the crowds that when they see clouds rising in the west, they recognize that rain is approaching.

Luke 12:55 — When the wind blows from the south, they know that hot weather is coming.

Luke 12:56 — Jesus rebukes them because they understand the signs of the weather but fail to recognize the significance of the time in which they are living.

Luke 12:57 — Jesus challenges them to recognize for themselves what is right.

Luke 12:58 — He urges them to settle their disagreements before reaching the judge, warning that failing to do so could lead to imprisonment.

Luke 12:59 — Jesus warns that the consequences of judgment will not simply disappear.

Jesus challenges His first-century audience to recognize what God is accomplishing before their eyes. The promised Messiah is among them, yet many fail to understand the importance of His coming.

Kingdom Connection

Today’s readings reveal the importance of recognizing God’s Kingdom and living faithfully within it.

Paul teaches that believers are united through one Lord, one faith, one baptism, and one Spirit. Through Jesus Christ, God’s people share one calling and one hope.

Jesus challenges His first-century generation because they could recognize changes in the weather but could not recognize the significance of His presence among them.

His warning carries particular importance when considering the coming judgment upon Jerusalem in AD 70, which marked the destruction of the temple and a decisive historical turning point between the Old Covenant temple order and the New Covenant community.

The Kingdom of God was being revealed through Jesus Christ. Those who recognized Him were called to live together as one people under their everlasting King.
