Friday of the Twenty-eighth Week in Ordinary Time

Lectionary 471

First Reading — Ephesians 1:11–14

Ephesians 1:11 — In Christ, God’s people were chosen according to His divine purpose. God accomplishes all things according to His will.

Ephesians 1:12 — Those who first placed their hope in Christ were called to bring praise and glory to God.

Ephesians 1:13 — You also heard the truth, the Gospel of your salvation. When you believed in Christ, you were sealed with the promised Holy Spirit.

Ephesians 1:14 — The Holy Spirit is the first installment of our promised inheritance, assuring believers of God’s redemption.

Paul reminds the first-century believers that they were chosen in Christ and had already received the Holy Spirit as a guarantee of their promised inheritance.

Responsorial Psalm — Psalm 33:1–2, 4–5, 12–13

Response: Blessed the people the Lord has chosen to be his own.

Psalm 33:1–2 — Rejoice in the Lord and praise Him with joyful music. Those who live righteously should continually give Him thanks.

Psalm 33:4–5 — God’s Word is trustworthy, and everything He does is faithful. He loves justice and righteousness, and His goodness fills the earth.

Psalm 33:12–13 — Blessed are the people who belong to the Lord. From heaven, God looks upon all humanity.

Alleluia — Psalm 33:22

Lord, may Your mercy rest upon us as we place our hope and trust in You.

Gospel — Luke 12:1–7

Luke 12:1 — As enormous crowds gather around Jesus, He warns His disciples to beware of the hypocrisy of the Pharisees.

Luke 12:2 — Nothing that has been concealed will remain hidden. Everything secret will eventually be revealed.

Luke 12:3 — Words spoken privately will become known publicly. What was whispered behind closed doors will be announced openly.

Luke 12:4 — Jesus tells His followers not to fear those who can kill the body but have no power beyond physical death.

Luke 12:5 — Instead, they should reverence God, who holds authority over eternal judgment.

Luke 12:6 — Even the smallest sparrows are remembered by God. Not one escapes His attention.

Luke 12:7 — God knows even the number of hairs upon your head. Do not be afraid, because you are worth far more than many sparrows.

Jesus encourages His disciples to remain faithful despite opposition. God sees everything, knows His people personally, and cares for them.

Kingdom Connection

Today’s readings reveal the security of God’s promises through Jesus Christ.

Paul tells first-century believers that they had already received the promised Holy Spirit as the guarantee of their inheritance in Christ.

Jesus prepares His disciples for the opposition they would encounter while proclaiming the Kingdom. He reminds them that although earthly authorities could threaten their lives, their ultimate security rested with God.

Through the New Covenant, God’s people receive the Holy Spirit and the assurance of their inheritance in His everlasting Kingdom.
