Monday of the Twenty-eighth Week in Ordinary Time

First Reading — Galatians 4:22–24, 26–27, 31–5:1

Scripture paraphrased

Galatians 4:22–23 — Abraham had two sons: one born to Hagar, the enslaved woman, and the other to Sarah, the free woman, through God’s promise.

Galatians 4:24 — Paul explains that these two women represent two covenants. Hagar represents the covenant associated with Mount Sinai and bondage.

Galatians 4:26–27 — The heavenly Jerusalem is free and is the mother of God’s people. God’s promise brings forth a family greater than human expectations.

Galatians 4:31–5:1 — Believers belong to the free woman, not the enslaved woman. Christ has given them freedom, so they must not return to bondage.

Paul contrasts the Old Covenant with the freedom believers receive through Christ and God’s promises.

Responsorial Psalm — Psalm 113:1b–2, 3–4, 5a, 6–7

Response: May the Lord’s name be praised forever.

Psalm 113:1–2 — All who serve the Lord are called to praise His name, now and throughout every generation.

Psalm 113:3–4 — From sunrise to sunset, God’s name deserves praise. His glory rises above every nation.

Psalm 113:5–7 — No one compares with our God. Though He reigns above all creation, He reaches down to lift the poor and humble.

God’s greatness is revealed not only through His power but also through His compassion.

Alleluia — Psalm 95:8

When God speaks to us today, we must listen with willing hearts rather than stubbornly resisting His voice.

Gospel — Luke 11:29–32

Scripture paraphrased

Luke 11:29 — Jesus tells the growing crowd that their generation keeps demanding miraculous proof, but they will receive the sign of Jonah.

Luke 11:30 — Just as Jonah became a sign to Nineveh, the Son of Man would be a sign to the people of Jesus’ generation.

Luke 11:31 — The queen of the South traveled a great distance to hear Solomon’s wisdom, yet someone far greater than Solomon was standing before them.

Luke 11:32 — The people of Nineveh repented when Jonah preached. Jesus warns that His generation faces judgment for rejecting someone greater than Jonah.

Jesus calls His first-century audience to recognize the Messiah standing among them and respond with repentance rather than continually demanding more signs.

Kingdom Connection

Today’s readings reveal the transition from the Old Covenant to the New Covenant.

Paul specifically identifies the Jerusalem above as free and the mother of God’s people. Through Christ, believers are children of God’s promise rather than servants under the old covenant system.

Jesus also warns His own generation about coming judgment because they refused to recognize Him. This warning points toward the judgment upon Jerusalem in AD 70.

The earthly Jerusalem of the old covenant age would pass away, but the heavenly Jerusalem and Christ’s New Covenant Kingdom would remain.
