Memorial of Saint Charles Borromeo, Bishop

Lectionary 487

First Reading — Philippians 2:12–18

Philippians 2:12 — Paul urges the believers to continue living out their salvation with reverence and obedience, even while he is absent.

Philippians 2:13 — God is working within His people, giving them both the desire and the ability to accomplish His good purpose.

Philippians 2:14–15 — Do everything without complaining or arguing. Live as blameless children of God, shining like lights amid a crooked and corrupt generation.

Philippians 2:16 — Hold firmly to the Word of Life, so Paul's labor among them will not have been in vain on the day of Christ.

Philippians 2:17–18 — Even if Paul must sacrifice his life for their faith, he rejoices and encourages them to share in his joy.

Paul encourages first-century Christians to remain faithful, allowing God's work within them to shine before the world as they anticipate the day of Christ.

Responsorial Psalm — Psalm 27:1, 4, 13–14

Response: The Lord is my light and my salvation.

Psalm 27:1 — The Lord is our light, salvation, and refuge. With Him, there is no reason to fear.

Psalm 27:4 — The psalmist desires one thing above all else: to dwell in God's house and behold His beauty.

Psalm 27:13 — He believes he will experience the goodness of the Lord in the land of the living.

Psalm 27:14 — Wait upon the Lord with courage. Strengthen your heart and trust in Him.

The psalm celebrates God's presence and the confidence of those who faithfully seek Him.

Alleluia — 1 Peter 4:14

1 Peter 4:14 — Blessed are those who suffer insults because of Christ, for the Spirit of God rests upon them.

Gospel — Luke 14:25–33

Luke 14:25–26 — Large crowds follow Jesus. He teaches that becoming His disciple requires loving Him above even one's closest family relationships and one's own life.

Luke 14:27 — Whoever refuses to carry his cross and follow Jesus cannot truly be His disciple.

Luke 14:28–30 — Jesus compares discipleship to building a tower. A wise builder first calculates the cost to make sure the work can be completed.

Luke 14:31–32 — Jesus gives another example: a king considering battle must first determine whether his army can overcome a stronger opponent.

Luke 14:33 — Jesus concludes that anyone unwilling to surrender earthly possessions and attachments cannot be His disciple.

Jesus teaches that following Him requires a deliberate commitment. Discipleship must take priority over worldly possessions, personal comforts, and even family expectations.

Kingdom Connection

Paul encouraged first-century believers to shine as lights in the world while holding firmly to the Word of Life as they awaited the day of Christ.

Jesus reminded His followers that entering into the life of His Kingdom required wholehearted commitment, not merely following the crowds.

The New Covenant calls God's people to live faithfully in His everlasting Kingdom, placing Jesus Christ above every earthly possession and relationship.
