Friday of the Thirtieth Week in Ordinary Time

Lectionary 483

First Reading — Philippians 1:1–11

Philippians 1:1–2 — Paul and Timothy greet the believers in Philippi, including their church leaders, with grace and peace from God the Father and Jesus Christ.

Philippians 1:3–5 — Paul thanks God with joy whenever he remembers them because they have shared in spreading the Gospel from the beginning.

Philippians 1:6 — Paul expresses confidence that God, who began His good work among them, will bring it to completion by the day of Jesus Christ.

Philippians 1:7–8 — Even while imprisoned, Paul considers these believers partners in God's grace and in defending the Gospel.

Philippians 1:9–11 — Paul prays that their love will continue growing in knowledge and understanding so they can recognize what is best and be filled with righteousness through Jesus Christ.

Paul encourages the first-century believers in Philippi to remain faithful, grow in love, and continue participating in God's work as they anticipate the day of Christ.

Responsorial Psalm — Psalm 111:1–2, 3–4, 5–6

Response: How great are the works of the Lord!

Psalm 111:1–2 — Give thanks to the Lord wholeheartedly among His people. His wonderful works deserve to be remembered and celebrated.

Psalm 111:3–4 — God's works are glorious, His righteousness endures forever, and He is gracious and merciful.

Psalm 111:5–6 — God provides for those who honor Him. He remembers His covenant forever and reveals His power by giving His people an inheritance among the nations.

The psalm celebrates God's faithfulness to His covenant and His wonderful works throughout history.

Alleluia — John 10:27

John 10:27 — Jesus declares that His sheep recognize His voice. He knows them personally, and they follow Him.

Gospel — Luke 14:1–6

Luke 14:1 — On the Sabbath, Jesus enters the home of a prominent Pharisee for a meal. The religious leaders watch Him closely.

Luke 14:2 — A man suffering from dropsy, a condition involving abnormal fluid accumulation, stands before Jesus.

Luke 14:3 — Jesus challenges the experts in the Law and the Pharisees by asking whether healing someone on the Sabbath is lawful.

Luke 14:4 — They remain silent. Jesus heals the man and sends him away.

Luke 14:5 — Jesus asks whether they would immediately rescue a son or an ox that had fallen into a well, even on the Sabbath.

Luke 14:6 — The religious leaders cannot answer His question.

Jesus demonstrates that God's mercy and compassion are not contrary to His commandments. The religious leaders struggle to recognize that helping someone in need fulfills the loving purpose of God's Law.

Kingdom Connection

Today's readings reveal God's faithfulness to His covenant and the transforming power of Jesus Christ.

Paul reminds the first-century believers in Philippi that God had already begun a good work among them. The Gospel was spreading beyond Israel, bringing Gentiles into fellowship through Christ.

The psalm celebrates God's everlasting covenant faithfulness, while Jesus demonstrates that mercy and love are central to understanding God's commandments.

Through the New Covenant, God's people are called to grow in love, righteousness, and faithful service as citizens of His everlasting Kingdom.
